Hooks
40 video ad hooks that stop the scroll, sorted by industry
People decide whether to keep watching your ad in about the time it takes to blink. That's why the opening line, the hook, matters more than anything else in a short video. A great video ad hook makes the right person think “wait, that's me” before their thumb moves on.
Below you'll find the six hook formulas that show up again and again in strong ads, then 40 example video ad hooks sorted by industry: product brands, beauty and skincare, restaurants, salons, gyms, home services, real estate and retail. Borrow them, bend them to fit, and test a couple against each other.
Six hook formulas behind every good video ad hook
- Call out the person. Name who the ad is for. “Dog owners, this one's for you.”
- Name the pain. Say the annoying thing out loud. “Tired of tangled cords on your desk?”
- Open a loop. Start a story or a question the viewer wants closed. “We almost didn't open this shop.”
- Show the surprise. Lead with the most unexpected visual or fact that is true about you.
- Flip a belief. Gently challenge a common assumption. “You don't need ten products for a morning routine.”
- Lead with the offer. When the offer is the news, just say it. “Gift sets are back. That's the ad.”
Whatever formula you use, put the hook on screen as big text too. Plenty of people watch with the sound off, and the text is what stops them. Then keep the promise: a hook that doesn't match the rest of the ad loses people fast, and a hook that overpromises can break advertising rules.
Video ad hooks for product brands and online stores
For product video ads and online stores, the hook usually pairs with the first shot of the product in use.
- “I didn't know I needed this until I tried it once.”
- “Three ways to use the thing in your cart.”
- “This is what's actually inside the box.”
- “Made in small batches. Here's why that matters.”
- “If your water bottle leaks in your bag, watch this.”
- “We sold out last time. It's back.”
- “Gift it, or keep it. We won't tell.”
- “Packed by hand, by the two of us.”

Hooks for beauty, skincare and cosmetic brands
Beauty hooks work best when they lead with the experience: texture, scent, the routine, the ingredients. Avoid hooks that promise results you can't back up, like “clears acne” or “erases wrinkles”. Some of those claims can even change how a product is regulated. Our guide to beauty ad claims rules explains why.
- “Watch this texture melt in.”
- “My whole morning routine, in one bag.”
- “The lip shade I keep reaching for.”
- “Five ingredients. Here's what each one is for.”
- “Your vanity called. It wants fewer bottles.”
- “Packed for a weekend in a carry-on? Here's how.”

How to test your video ad hooks
You won't know your best hook until real people see it. The easiest test: keep the whole ad the same and change only the first few seconds. Run both versions with the same budget and audience, and keep the one people watch longer.
- Test one change at a time: the hook line, the first shot, or the on-screen text.
- Give each version enough time and views before you decide.
- Keep your winners in a list. The same formula often works again next season.

Write your own hooks, or get them done for you?
Writing hooks is the fun part. Turning them into a finished ad yourself usually means a video generator app, a voice app, an editing app, a stock music library and a caption app. Published plans for each kind of tool commonly run from about $6 to $40 a month. One example stack of five monthly plans we priced in October 2026 came to about $116 a month, or about $1,392 a year, before extra credits. See what DIY video ad tools really cost.
With a flat price, the hook is part of the job. A Spokesperson ad ($349) comes with a script that has an attention-grabbing opening, read by a friendly on-camera presenter in a natural, phone-filmed style. A Product showcase ($299) opens on your product in action, built from up to 5 of your own clips or photos. Want to test two openings? Add an extra opening version for $49. Every video includes one revision and is ready in 3 business days.
