How long does it take to make a video ad?

The tools say "minutes." Your calendar says otherwise. If you have ever asked how long it takes to make a video ad for your business, the honest answer is: much longer than the first clip suggests.

This guide walks through each step of making a short ad yourself and where the hours go, then compares that with sending a brief once and getting a finished video back in 3 or 7 business days.

How long does it take to make a video ad yourself?

Generating a single clip can be fast. A finished ad is different. It needs a script, visuals, a voice, music, captions, an offer at the end and the right size for each platform. Each of those is its own job.

For most owners making their first 15-second ad, the work easily fills an afternoon, and often stretches across several evenings once you count re-dos and learning new apps. Time is one of the main reasons owners skip video altogether: in Wyzowl's 2026 video survey, 19% of marketers who don't use video said they lack the time.

Where the hours go, step by step

  1. Script. Fifteen seconds is only about 35 to 40 spoken words, and every one has to earn its spot. Writing an opening that stops the scroll and an offer that makes sense often takes several drafts.
  2. Generate visuals. With a video generator app, you write a prompt, wait, review and try again. Odd hands, faces that change between shots and strange motion mean lots of re-dos, and each one uses credits.
  3. Voiceover. In a voice app, you choose a voice, then fix how it says your business name, your prices and your call to action. Getting natural pacing can take many takes.
  4. Edit. In an editing app, you line up clips with the voice, trim, add on-screen text and pick music from a stock music library that is licensed for ads.
  5. Captions. A caption app helps, but you still check spelling, timing and line breaks so they are readable on a phone.
  6. Resize and export. Vertical for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, plus square or wide for other spots. Each shape can push text off the screen, so you fix the layout for each one.

Any mistake late in the process, like a voice line that no longer matches a new clip, can send you back two or three steps.

And remember, most of this happens after hours. You are fitting it in between customers, invoices and dinner. A task that would take a full-time editor one focused sitting can stretch across a week of stolen half-hours, because every time you come back you have to remember where you left off.

The hidden time: learning curves and re-dos

The steps above assume you already know the apps. The first time, you are also learning five sets of menus and settings. That is the part nobody puts on the box.

Then there are re-dos. A clip that looked fine on your laptop looks wrong on your phone. The voice sounds flat. The music license turns out not to cover paid ads. Each fix takes time, and some cost money too. We add up the money side in the real cost of making video ads yourself, and the credit side in what happens when AI video credits run out.

Getting the size and length right

Even after the video is done, you need it to fit where it runs. TikTok's ad specs recommend 9:16 vertical video at least 540x960. Google Ads help for Shorts covers vertical video for YouTube Shorts ads. Our social video ad specs cheat sheet puts the main platforms on one page.

Length matters too. A 15-second ad takes far less time to make than a 60-second story. If you are not sure what you need, see how long a video ad should be for each platform.

Sending a brief once: what it takes on your end

With a done-for-you studio, your part is short. No tech skills needed. You can:

That is usually a few minutes. Then we handle the script, voiceover, music, captions and end card. Here is how long it takes to get your finished video ad from Storyhand Studio:

Every video includes one revision, so you get a chance to adjust it without starting over. Not sure which video to pick? Read which video ad is right for your business.

Making it yourself vs a flat price

Doing it yourself costs hours of scripting, generating, voicing, editing, captioning and resizing, plus the subscriptions behind each step. One example stack of five monthly plans we priced in October 2026 came to about $116 a month before extra credits.

A done-for-you Quick promo video for $199 takes a few minutes of your time and comes back in 3 business days with voiceover, music, captions and an end card with your offer. You can post it on any channel for as long as you like. See all four options on our video pricing page, or order your video and get your evenings back.
